The Imperial College Renal and Transplant Centre at Hammersmith Hospital is the largest facility of its kind in Europe. The centre is staffed by a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, with expertise across a range of subspecialties, including nephrologists, surgeons, cardiologists, infectious disease specialists and dedicated renal anaesthetists. Our renal service consists of three main areas – nephrology (the study of the kidneys), transplantation and kidney dialysis.

If you do need surgery, our kidney transplant team have the broadest range of experience in Europe, completing over 2,000 live donor kidney transplants to date. Live donor transplants are considered to be the most effective method of ensuring a successful outcome, with both patient and donor returning to normal life within a matter of weeks. The team are experienced in delivering all available surgical techniques from keyhole surgery to mini-open surgery; meaning that your treatment will be tailored to the precise needs of you and your kidney donor. The team are also able to support you if you have polycystic kidney disease, which may be prohibiting you from having a transplant at present. Our consultants are highly experienced in this type of surgery, completing over twenty similar surgeries every year.
If you require surgery for kidney dialysis access, our skilled renal surgery team will be able to fast-track surgery for you. We offer minimally-invasive keyhole techniques, with short recovery times and a minimal hospital stay. Our specialist dialysis nurses are trained to support you throughout your treatment, and we will aim to accommodate dialysis treatment at a date and time that suits you wherever possible.
Our team are able to support patients with very complex care needs, and can offer a second opinion service if you have not been able to receive treatment elsewhere.
