Our consultants are all experienced members of the major trauma centre at St Mary’s Hospital – one of the busiest trauma units in the country. Their expertise spans working in war zones or dealing with mass casualties through to sports injuries and DIY accidents. Their work in our private plastic and reconstructive surgery team is embedded in this range of experience, with the skills to help you, whatever your concern.
Much of our plastic and reconstructive surgery takes place in The Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital. The hospital itself is a major UK wide referral centre for complex reconstructive dealing with complex upper and lower limb problems. We also provide services at Charing Cross Hospital for cancer patients who require reconstructive surgery where work alongside some of the best cancer consultants in the UK.
As one of the UK’s largest teaching hospital groups, our team are involved in the latest plastic surgery research and are able to provide the most up-to-date techniques. This includes the “Hololens” approach where augmented reality technology is used to detect blood vessels, which optimises reconstruction and the potential for a successful outcome.
We offer a multidisciplinary approach to care, with your chosen consultant working closely with orthopaedic surgeons, radiologists, rheumatologists and support services such as physiotherapy with the aim of providing you with the best possible outcome.
Our lower limb service has some of the best results in the country, including a limb reconstruction rate of 98.5%. The national standards for trauma surgery were in fact developed alongside our consultant body.
After surgery, we will continue to support you throughout your rehabilitation. Your chosen consultant will see you regularly to monitor your progress and recommend any further steps with your treatment. Our nurses are experts in wound care and will be able to advise you on the best way to protect yourself through your recovery period. We can also offer topical negative pressure wound therapy (VAC therapy) which supports better healing of wounds.
In addition, our physiotherapy team will devise an exercise programme designed to improve mobility in your lower limb as far as possible. This service can be provided as an inpatient or an outpatient.
