We are delighted to share that the neonatal and maternity service across St Mary’s and Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea hospitals successfully achieved stage two accreditation for the UNICEF Baby Friendly Standards recently; the first joint assessment of its kind in the UK.

The baby friendly standards have been created by UNICEF to provide a roadmap for services to improve care. Through the staged accreditation programme, health professionals are enabled to support all mothers with feeding and to help parents to build a close and loving relationship with their baby.

As part of the assessment, midwives, neonatal nurses and other members of the multidisciplinary team were interviewed by the external assessors who gave very positive feedback. The success follows an immense amount of hard work across the teams to embed staff knowledge around supporting infant feeding. This accreditation shows the commitment of both services to supporting breastfeeding as the best start in life for babies in our care.
