Lindo Wing antenatal care 

From the moment we meet you, we will guarantee consistency of treatment and continuity of care until you and your baby are discharged from us.

Whether you have a high or low risk pregnancy, under the guidance of your consultant we will ensure you are closely monitored and understand the options available to you, with our recommendations.

Our team has the expertise to advise immediately on the next steps if an issue is detected. They will work closely with specialist colleagues to ensure that any condition is investigated promptly.

We also have a specialist service to support you if you have recurrent miscarriages or early pregnancy concerns.

Day assessment unit

If you have any worries about your pregnancy, then we offer appointments at our day assessment unit. Our midwifery team are on hand to assess your concerns and offer appropriate onwards guidance or treatment for your condition. We accept referrals directly from patients or from your consultant. We can also support you if you have any postnatal problems related to your pregnancy or birth.

This service is available 08.00 – 19.00 Monday to Friday and is exclusively for women giving birth at The Lindo Wing.

Antenatal classes

To help you prepare for your new arrival, we offer a range of antenatal classes available exclusively to parents having their baby at The Lindo Wing. All of our classes can be tailored to one-to-one classes on request for an additional fee. Please speak to one of our team.

This group antenatal classes take place over three weeks and cover the following topics:

  • Pregnancy and hormonal changes
  • Nutrition and exercise
  • The importance of the pelvic floor muscles
  • Stages & signs of labour
  • Preparing yourself and your partner for the birth – the role of a birthing partner
  • The birth plan
  • Natural methods of pain relief (e.g.aromatherapy, breathing, relaxation, keeping active, massage, TENS etc)

This session will be run by a midwife.

  • Types of birth (natural birth, caesarean section, instrumental delivery, breech delivery)
  • When to come in and what to bring
  • When things do not go as planned
  • Pain relief methods
  • Induction of labour

This session will be run by a midwife and an anaesthetist

  • Familiarise yourself with the unit – meet the team
  • The morning after your delivery at the Lindo Wing – who and what to expect?
  • Early days with your baby
  • Baby care
  • Baby-led feeding
  • What happens when you go home (midwife and health visitor visits)
  • Postnatal period – what to expect

This session will be run by a midwife and a nursery nurse

These classes are run on a Monday or Tuesday evening from 18.00 – 20.30 and take place in the seminar room at The Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital. Classes cost £400 (prices correct until April 2019).

If you would like a more tailored approach, we can also offer bespoke one-to-one antenatal classes which can be carried out either at The Lindo Wing or in your own home at a time to suit you. The one-to-one classes will be designed around your specific requirements. Please contact our team for more details.

Complimentary classes

If you would like additional information about caring for your baby which compliments your antenatal classes, we offer a variety of stand-alone courses that can be booked separately.

These are useful whether you are a first time parent or having a subsequent child, as a refresher.

These courses are run in the seminar room at The Lindo Wing, or can be offered as bespoke one-to-one classes on request for an additional fee.

Our paediatric first aid course for parents will cover all you need to know to manage emergencies with your baby or young child, giving you peace of mind. This course can be attended either before or after the birth of your baby.

Course content

  • Assessing emergency situations
  • Prioritising what to do in an emergency
  • Helping an unresponsive child
  • What to do if your child is having a seizure
  • What to do if your child is choking
  • What to do if your child is bleeding
  • Helping a child suffering from shock

£100 per couple

Course leader: Alessanda D’Angelo

We understand that during your antenatal preparation classes the time to focus on breastfeeding is limited when there are so many topics to discuss.

This is a small group class, designed around the needs of you and your partner, to ensure you are 100% ready and confident about breastfeeding when the baby arrives.

The course allows plenty of time for practical tips, and covers the truth and myths around breastfeeding, giving you an in depth knowledge on this very important topic.

Course content 

  • Common beliefs and myths around breastfeeding
  • Diet and breastfeeding
  • The benefits of breastfeeding
  • How does breastfeeding work?
  • How much milk is produced?
  • Normal feeding patterns
  • First feed and skin-to-skin contact
  • How do I know my baby is getting enough milk?
  • Positioning and attachment
  • Keeping baby close and responsive feeding
  • Common breastfeeding problems and how to treat or avoid them

Cost: £90 per couple

Course duration: one session, two and a half hours

Our baby massage classes offer you the tools and skills to extend your gift of intuitive touch with confidence.

Massage can be used to soothe and relax your baby, for play, and to enhance flexibility and strength. Above all, massage deepens the bond between you and your baby.

Our massage classes are relaxed and fun, and open to mums and dads. Each course includes three sessions, each lasting three hours. Dads’ only classes are also run on request.

Karen is a midwife at The Lindo Wing and has been working as a massage therapist for 20 years.

Booking classes

We recommend that antenatal classes are booked any time after 28 weeks of pregnancy. This gives you an opportunity to think about any questions or concerns you may have leading up to the birth and make sure you are familiar with The Lindo Wing surroundings before the big day.
