Miscarriage and pregnancy concerns

Based at Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital and St Mary’s Hospital. We are part of one of the world’s leading centres for supporting early pregnancy concerns and both early and late miscarriages. We have been at the forefront of researching recurrent miscarriages for more than 30 years.

About the service

We are able to support you if you have any concerns during the early stages of pregnancy or if you have had a miscarriage.

Our team regularly see pregnant people under 20 weeks’ gestation, who have concerns with their pregnancy or are affected by pain and bleeding. We take a multidisciplinary approach with specialist nurses and consultants from other areas to provide diagnosis, treatment and patient support.

The recurrent miscarriage service at St Mary’s Hospital has been at the forefront of research and investigation into this area for over three decades. Our team have transformed the investigation, counselling and treatment of people with recurrent miscarriages.

Unfortunately, it's estimated about 1 in 8 pregnancies will end in miscarriage, many of which are due to embryo/fetal chromosomal abnormalities. This does not necessarily mean that you will have problems carrying a baby to term in the future. However, if you are at all worried, we are able to investigate your concerns.

Our unit at Hammersmith Hospital also runs specialist fertility clinics and our consultant gynaecologists can provide advice on contraception.

Services we offer

We are able to assist you with the following conditions:

• miscarriage (threatened and confirmed)
• significant pelvic pain
• bleeding in the early stages of pregnancy
• hyperemesis gravidarum (excessive sickness in pregnancy)
• recurrent miscarriage (defined as more than three consecutive pregnancy losses)
