Biography
Faisal Ahmed is a senior Glaucoma Ophthalmic Consultant Surgeon, and Head of Specialty at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College, London.
He was a trainee and glaucoma research fellow at Moorfields Eye Hospital and undertook a clinical glaucoma fellowship at the Western Eye Hospital.
Mr Ahmed was the UK national coordinator for World Glaucoma Day. He is a keen surgical trainer and publishes regularly on new surgical techniques. He is one of the authors for the Emerging Laser and Surgical Treatments for Glaucoma national website which is an award winning website and is the standard for all Royal College trainees.
He set up the Imperial College Ophthalmic Research Group (ICORG) and is regularly involved in surgical trials and is a member of the Scientific Committee for the UK and Eire Glaucoma society.
Faisal is a longstanding volunteer for Humanity First a UK registered Humanitarian Charity. He developed the Medical Disaster Response course and is lead author of the original course manual, upon which the UK government ran its first medical disaster response course as. And is now involved in the Gift of Sight programme in West Africa.
Biography
Miss Sally Ameen completed her pre-clinical medical school training at St Andrew’s University in Scotland, achieving distinction at BSC level. She then transferred to St George’s medical school in London where she graduated with the degree of merit. After her foundation training, she entered the ophthalmology run-through training in the north west London deanery and trained at the main ophthalmology teaching hospitals, namely Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Western Eye Hospital. Miss Ameen chose to sub-specialise in glaucoma and successfully completed her final year training in this field and went on to her current substantive consultant post at the Western Eye Hospital.
Through her training she has had a keen interest in education, taking every opportunity to formalise her skills and gain further experience in this field (through a special study module at medical school and then a postgraduate Msc module during training). She now holds the post of college tutor where she leads more than 20 trainees, both deanery and non-deanery and across the spectrum of seniority.
Miss Ameen has presented at a number of national and international meetings, published two book chapters and a number of other papers in peer reviewed journals.
Biography
Tariq Ayoub is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust where he is the Lead for A&E at Western Eye Hospital and does high volume cataract surgery in the Imperial cataract hub at Charing Cross Hospital. His interests include treatment for Cataract, Vision Correction including LASIK, PRK and ICL implants, Corneal disease including Keratoconus treatment and Eye-lid disorders.
After completing medical school in London, Mr. Ayoub went on to complete his Ophthalmology training at the prestigious London School of Ophthalmology, namely at Moorfields Eye Hospital and Royal Free Hospital. He has completed multiple fellowships in Cornea, Cataract, Refractive Surgery, Oculoplastics and Trauma. He was previously Locum Consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital before being appointed as Consultant at Imperial College Healthcare.
Tariq Ayoub is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth), a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow (FRCS-G) and a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology. He is on the specialist register of the General Medical Council and has received Specialist Certification in Refractive Surgery (Cert-LRS) by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
Mr. Ayoub has received multiple prizes and awards from national and international organisations for his work in the field of Ophthalmology. He has authored a number of peer-reviewed articles and has presented in national and international meetings across the globe. He is an active educator and is passionate about training junior eye surgeons.
Biography
Mr Ahmad Aziz has clinical interests in Oculoplastics, Eyelid Surgery and Cataract. He qualified in 2005 at University College London and trained in London and at the Western Eye Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital and did additional orbital training with the Maxillofacial department at Northwick Park Hospital. He is the clinical lead for high volume cataract surgery and theatres, laser and Helping our teams transform in Ophthalmology. He is a member of the British Oculoplastic Society dealing with plastic surgery of the eyelids and the area around the eyes. He is a member of numerous multidisciplinary groups at Imperial including those specialising in facial reconstruction, thyroid eye disease, pituitary tumours, skull base pathology and head and neck cancer. His special clinical and research interests include eyelid surgery, thyroid eye disease, paediatric nasolacrimal duct obstruction, orbital trauma and patient reported outcomes.
Biography
Mukhtar Bizrah is a consultant cornea and cataract surgeon at the Western Eye Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He is one of the few ophthalmic surgeons in the world who is board certified in the UK, Canada and Europe:
1. Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth, UK)
2. Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC, Canada)
3. Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO, Europe)
Mukhtar is an expert in advanced corneal diseases and cataracts. His clinical interests include cataract and refractive surgeries, cornea transplants (partial and full thickness), pterygium surgery and advanced cornea diseases. He is interested in complex cornea and cataract disorders, and provides second opinions on such cases.
Mukhtar has presented his research at numerous international conferences and peer-reviewed research articles. By 2020, he had won 25 awards and prizes on International, national and regional levels.
Mr Bizrah completed his core ophthalmology training at the London deanery, which included 2 years at the Western Eye Hospital and 2 years at Moorfields eye hospital.
He has completed advanced cornea and cataract surgery fellowships at two of the world’s most renowned eye institutions: Western Eye Hospital (London, UK) and University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada).
He attended University College London and St George’s University of London. He won numerous awards by the time he completed undergraduate training, including London Student of the Year award, Royal Society of Medicine Brigadier Haywood prize and Wellcome Trust Research Prize.
Mukhtar Bizrah is the founder & co-director of London Eye Course, the largest ophthalmology revision course in Europe & North America.
Biography
Philip Bloom has clinical interests in Glaucoma & Cataract. He qualified in 1984 (Bristol University) and trained in Bristol, The Western Eye Hospital & Moorfields Eye Hospital. He is President of the UK & Ireland Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (UKISCRS), Chairman of the International Glaucoma Association (IGA), Trustee and Board Member of the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM), council member & past President of the RSM Ophthalmology Section and a Keeler Scholarship Board Trustee (Royal College of Ophthalmologists). His special clinical and research interests include minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (including glaucoma laser treatments), neuro-protection, surgical simulation/training and spectacle independence after cataract surgery.
Biography
Miss Melanie Corbett is a consultant at the Western Eye Hospital. She specialises in corneal, ocular surface and anterior segment surgery, which includes surgery for complex cataract and corneal transplantation. She is also responsible for emergency cases including injuries and severe infections. She provides expertise in medical contact lens fitting for many corneal conditions including keratoconus.
Miss Corbett qualified from the Royal London Hospital in 1987 and undertook her ophthalmic training at Oxford, St Thomas’s, Kings College and Moorfields Eye hospitals. This included subspecialty fellowship training in cornea and complex cataract. She took up her consultant post in 1999. Miss Corbett has always been very interested in research and new developments, and has published over 60 scientific articles. She received a University of London Award to spend three years in a dedicated research post studying wound healing in the cornea, resulting in an MD degree. Her book ‘Corneal Topography – principles and applications’ addresses the measurement of corneal shape.
Miss Corbett also has major roles in training and education, both locally and nationally. She has particular interests in surgical training and trainee development within her own unit. As a training programme director she had responsibility for the delivery and quality assurance of training within the London deanery. Previously she was president of the Medical Contact Lens and Ocular Surface Association (MCLOSA) and hosted the European Medical Contact Lens Conference. For the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth) she has lead the Training the Trainers Programme nationally and overseas for nearly 10 years. She has been a member of the Executive Committee and the Trustee Board, and now chairs the Education Committee.
Biography
Laura Crawley is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon with specialist interests in glaucoma, cataract surgery and common red eye conditions such as blepharitis and conjunctivitis. Her expertise include bespoke cataract surgery, glaucoma laser treatments, minimally invasive and penetrating glaucoma surgery.
She qualified in medicine from the University of Bristol in 1999, winning the Gold Medal and Suple prizes for medicine and surgery. Having completed physician training and becoming a member of the Royal college of Physicians she undertook Ophthalmology training in Oxford, Moorfields and Imperial. She won the National Alcon Glaucoma prize in 2009 and was awarded the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ Treacher Collins prize in 2012 and Imperial College Ophthalmic Research Group Medal in 2011. She is published and lectures widely including the UCL Ophthalmology MSc course and BMJ masterclasses for GPs series. She is passionate about medical education and has published widely in this field and in glaucoma.
Her research is focused on improving glaucoma drop treatments and their side effects , endocyclophotocoagulation laser treatment in glaucoma and new ways of identifying glaucoma before significant damage has occurred.
Biography
Mr Graham Duguid trained in medicine in Aberdeen. He has completed postgraduate training in Glasgow, Melbourne, Paris and at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London.
