Imperial Private Healthcare has launched a new sleep service which offers a one-stop clinic for a fast diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) with specialist advice on further treatment.
The service, led by Dr Brendan Mallia Milanes is available at Charing Cross Hospital and will be able to provide a diagnostic service to support patients who have trouble sleeping.
Obstructive sleep apnoea is a condition where throat muscles relax during deep sleep, temporarily impacting on your breathing. Symptoms of sleep apnoea can include extreme tiredness during the day and if left untreated can lead to further health problems, so early diagnosis is recommended.
Patients will be seen by our specialist sleep consultant and will stay in a private room overnight where we will be able to monitor their sleep pattern and assess the likelihood of sleep apnoea. The overnight stay allows the patient to be monitored non-invasively during sleep and to investigate their breathing pattern, oxygen levels, heart rate and nasal airflow. This determines the presence and severity of OSA.
The study is scored by a sleep physiologist and interpreted by the consultant. On the morning after the study the consultant will discuss the results and treatment options with the patient and will refer them on for treatment if necessary.
Our consultants are members of the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust sleep medicine service, who have been recognised by the British Thoracic Society for their work in this area. Imperial Private Healthcare offers fast access to investigations and expert advice with the aim of improving patient sleep quality and well-being.
